It was another day at the office for Michael Carrick as Manchester United drew against a 10-man Tottenham Hotspur side. The Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur game didn’t live up to the expectations of Red Devils fans, as Dominic Solanke scored in stoppage time to rescue a point for Spurs.

The goal came after Bryan Mbeumo found the back of the net in the 73rd minute in the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match, following which Rodrigo Bentancur received a red card after failing to keep his cool. United thought they were going home with the second win of the season, only for Roberto De Zerbi’s side to cause an upset in the 92nd minute.

At this point, Carrick may have just lost the flair and magic he posed last season with the Red Devils. United have only six points out of a possible 18, which has put the Manchester United manager in a position where he has a lot of questions to answer. At this stage, United fans have nothing to expect, and the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match was no different. The players showed a lack of desire and passion to win the ball or even progress forward. In fact, Carrick’s side were without a shot (both on and off target) within 30 minutes played.

Carrick’s tactics and game management have been criticised this season. They have failed to remain consistent and have wasted every opportunity, including losing to a 10-man Manchester City. In the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur game, it’s clear the Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans partnership in the midfield isn’t working. Manchester United can’t build from the back anymore; they cannot dictate tempo or control midfield, and they cannot create clear-cut chances for their forwards to finish it off.

So disappointed about the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match, Wayne Rooney remarked:

“It’s absolutely embarrassing that Manchester United can’t beat 10-man Spurs at Old Trafford. No zeal, no hunger in them. Everyone is playing like they are very tired… could we blame the international break while most of them didn’t actually feature? Michael Carrick will need to find a way to win game get relieved of his job.”

Gary Neville wasn’t happy with the way Carrick’s team performed in the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match. He stated:

“I’ve got to be honest, that was a disgraceful performance from Manchester United. I can’t defend what I just watched. We saw the same against Manchester City this season when they went down to 10 men, and United still couldn’t take advantage. Now it’s happened again against Tottenham.”

Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Roberto De Zerbi Hasn’t Found The Formula Yet

There’s no doubt the noise falls on United’s part; but Spurs are still on the brink of relegation. De Zerbi’s side are yet to win a Premier League game this season, after signing some huge talents. They sit in 18th position in the table after the following games:

  • 1-1 draw vs. Manchester United
  • 2-3 loss vs. Aston Villa
  • 2-2 draw vs. Everton
  • 0-0 draw vs. Nottingham Forest
  • 0-2 loss vs. Newcastle
  • 0-3 loss vs. Brentford

This comes after Tottenham Hotspur broke the bank with £380 million spent, as they hope to fight for every available trophy this season.

However, some of the Spurs’ new signings still performed impressively well in the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur game. Sandro Tonali was just magical to watch. His stats in the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur game include:

  • 1 assist
  • 1 big chance created
  • 1 key pass
  • 1 foul won
  • 3/5 ground duels won
  • 6 possessions won
  • 52 passes
  • 11 final third passes
  • 78 touches
  • 12 sprints
  • 100% tackles won
  • 7.5 rating

Extra Time Talk

The season is still at dawn. Carrick still has the potential to do better in the league this season, and even forge ahead to lift the Premier League trophy, but he has to go back to the drawing board and fix the lapses.
