Manchester United climbed up to fourth position in the Premier League table, following their 1-0 win over West Ham United on September 22, 2021. Prior to that game, they had recorded five wins, three draws and two defeats in their last ten league games and were two points below West Ham United, even though they had a game in hand.
Marcus Rashford Sets Premier League Record after Firing Manchester United into Top 4
Out-of-Favour Rashford Becomes Hero at Old Trafford
Having defeated Brentford 3-1 in their last Premier League game, Manchester United perhaps had some confidence as they hosted West Ham. However, it looked like they weren’t going to take three points from the game as it remained goalless late into the second half. But Marcus Rashford, who came on as a second-half substitute for Anthony Elanga, ensured that they got the win by scoring a last-minute goal.
This wasn’t the first time Rashford had come off the bench to score for Manchester United. In fact, he came on as a substitute to score all his four Premier League goals in the 2021/22 season- against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford and then West Ham United.
Also, his late goal against West Ham United means that he has now scored more 90th-minute winners (four) than any player in Premier League history. Here is the breakdown; 90+2′ vs Hull City, 90+2′ vs Bournemouth, 90+3′ vs Wolverhampton Wanderers and 90+3′ vs West Ham United.
Manchester United’s goal against West Ham United was quite controversial as some believe it should have been disallowed for offside. Here is what Rashford said concerning the goal in a post-match interview with Sky Sports;
“I knew it wasn’t offside from Edi Cavani to me, and I don’t think it was from Anthony Martial to Edi. Before then I was just trying to get into the back post. It felt like a good goal and thankfully it stood.”
The win will serve as a big boost for Manchester United, who have not really been impressive under Ralf Rangnick and also for Rashford, who has been struggling for form.
