It was a historic evening in Madrid where the two English clubs met to compete for Champions League glory.
Both teams came in with new history
Liverpool were the side which had just come back from a victory against Barcelona. But it wasn’t just any big win—it was a historic 4-0 defeat to the Spanish leaders. After being three goals down in the first leg thanks to the magician Messi, Barcelona came to Anfield to live the shock of their lives. Being three goals up was supposed to be an advantage everyone thought Barcelona would take and make it count. However, Liverpool bounced back to make the scoreline 3-3 before some Trent Alexander-Arnold brilliance. Taking the corner short, he caught the opponents out to give Liverpool the win.
Tottenham, meanwhile, were up against Ajax already a goal down. Coming into Amsterdam wasn’t going to be easy and life was made even harder when De Ligt and Zyeich took the score to a spectacular lead of 3-0. In came Lucas Moura, whilst being the substitute in for injured Harry Kane, he made sure Spurs fans knew him alright. Scoring two goals in quick succession helped Tottenham gain confidence before scoring through the Brazillian in the final seconds of the game which gave him a hattrick to remember and send Spurs through to their first-ever Champions League final.
The Final Showdown
A penalty was given really early in the match when Sissoko pulled an arm out from a Mane cross. Mohammad Salah smashed the ball in to make it 1-0 to the Reds. Tottenham had several chances through Heung-Min Son but the South Korean was unable to take the opportunities. Spurs were all and dusted late in the game when Origi took the ball after it being scrambled unsuccessfully by Tottenham to give Liverpool the game. It was yet another trophy for Liverpool and yet another bottle from Tottenham who were made to wait even longer for a trophy
Pochettino and his words
Before the game, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino had hinted he would leave the club if Tottenham won the game. Whether that was a joke or a real statement, we still don’t know. “To win in these circumstances this season, maybe I need to think about maybe doing something different in the future,” said Pochettino at his press conference.
His Exit
Things took a deeper turn as Spurs lost their mojo during the 2019/20 season with results that were just not good enough. These included the Bayern Munich insult of 7-2 at home and a 3-0 loss to Brighton meaning it was November when chairman Daniel Levy took the job away from the manager.
