Nottingham Forest vs FC Porto: Morgan Gibbs-White Sends Forest Into A European Semi-Final For The First Time In Over 40 Years

The Nottingham Forest vs FC Porto saw the Reds claim a famous 1-0 win to move into the UEFA Europa League semi-final, their first European semi-final in over 40 years.

Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White got the only goal in the game as the Reds captain stepped up for his team when they needed him the most.

FC Porto, even though they went down to 10 men following Jan Bednarek’s red card, fought to the end and hit the bar twice in the second half.

However, it was Forest’s night as they will now face Aston Villa in the UEFA Europa League semi-final.

Nottingham Forest vs FC Porto: As It Happened

An early chance in the Nottingham Forest vs FC Porto clash saw the Portuguese side get on the front foot. Terem Moffi looked to dink the ball past Stefan Ortega, but the Forest shot-stopper came out quickly and denied the forward.

Inside the first 10 minutes, the game flipped on its head as FC Porto went down to 10 men following Jan Bednarek’s reckless tackle on Chris Wood.

Forest kicked into gear following the red card as Morgan Gibbs-White drove forward and delivered the ball into the box; however, it evaded the boot of Wood.

In the 12th minute, the UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg saw its first goal, as Gibbs-White, playing high up the pitch, won possession and drove forward with purpose.

Forest’s captain let fly from outside the box, and with the ball taking a massive deflection, it wrong-footed Diogo Costa and hit the back of the net.

The Nottingham Forest vs FC Porto game saw the Reds dominate the opening 15 minutes, as Nicolas Dominguez was the next Forest player to shoot, but his effort was off target.

Vitor Pereira’s men continued to stay on the front foot as the front line of Dan Ndoye, Omari Hutchinson, and the substitute Igor Jesus looked to find openings, but Costa was alert to the danger.

A great set-piece routine saw Hutchinson’s hoisted cross nodded down into the path of Jair Cunha, who passed the ball back to Murillo, but his effort was narrowly wide of the target.

Hutchinson, who has looked lively all half, had the chance to release a shot goalwards, but his curling effort was straight into the hands of Costa.

Another brilliant delivery into the box saw Dominguez meet the ball with a header; however, his glancing effort failed to hit the target.

Within the first seconds of the second half, the visitors won a free-kick as William Gomes was fouled on the edge of the box by Dominguez. The subsequent set piece was taken by Gomes; however, his shot was straight into the wall.

Up the other end, Neco Williams was able to drift into the box and let fly, but the experienced Thiago Silva was there to block the full-back’s effort.

UEFA Europa League’s top goalscorer, Igor Jesus, had a chance to shoot goalwards after Ola Aina picked him out in the box, but his effort was straight at Costa.

FC Porto were inches from getting the equaliser as Seko Fofana’s cross found William Gomes, whose effort crashed off the crossbar.

Within an instant, Forest were up the other end as Callum Hudson-Odoi’s lay-off to Gibbs-White saw the Reds’ captain’s effort deflect out for a corner that Forest failed to capitalise on.

Forest continued to press on whilst FC Porto were penned in as the hosts looked to double their advantage on the night.

FC Porto, however, would not back down without a fight as Fofana flashed an effort narrowly wide of the target.

Gibbs-White gave possession away and allowed Alan Varela to fire a dipping effort, which luckily for Forest cannoned off the bar.

For Forest, they flooded forward, but Dominguez’s vicious effort went wide of Costa’s right post.

The Reds went into game management from that point onwards as they took the ball into the corner flag and held onto a famous 1-0 win to progress to the UEFA Europa League semi-final.

Nottingham Forest vs FC Porto: Morgan Gibbs-White – Leading By Captain’s Example

On a night where they were missing their midfield cog in Elliot Anderson due to the tragic passing of his mother, Reds captain Morgan Gibbs-White needed to step up and fill in by running the show in the midfield.

The gaps started opening up early for Forest’s number 10, and the amount of freedom he had in the midfield, it allowed him to dictate the play and drive the hosts forward.

Following Jan Bednarek’s sending off inside the first 10 minutes, which completely altered the trajectory of this UEFA Europa League quarter-final, FC Porto had to drop a midfielder into the defence, and therefore, it gave Gibbs-White even more time and freedom on the ball.

Soon after, the battling Forest captain won possession in the Porto half, dancing his way towards the visitors’ goal, as he unleashed a shot that deflected up into the air and past a stranded Diogo Costa.

His pass accuracy of 90% during the match just proved how much time and space he was afforded, as well as the 100% success rate in his long passes.

Alongside the Forest captain, players like Ibrahim Sangare, who had a battling performance in midfield, and Neco Williams, who was named as the Man of the Match for the game, were influential in the Forest win.

The Nottingham Forest vs FC Porto clash highlighted that even with the Reds in the midst of a relegation battle in the Premier League, they were able to stick together, work for each other and progress into their first European semi-final in over 40 years.

Nottingham Forest vs FC Porto: Dragões Hopes Dashed Within Opening 10 Minutes

After Jan Bednarek’s reckless tackle on Chris Wood inside the first 10 minutes, it was a massive uphill task for FC Porto.

The Liga Portugal league leaders have been in tremendous form in all competitions, but poor defending decisions saw them pay the price in both legs of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Forest.

In the first leg, Martim Fernandes’ own goal, after a shocking pass back to goalkeeper Diogo Costa, cost them the much-needed advantage they needed heading into the second leg at the City Ground.

Following such a collapse, Francisco Faroli had to do something in the second leg to salvage FC Porto’s UEFA Europa League campaign; however, the script went the opposite way.

A sending off, down to 10 men, having to shift a midfielder into defence, FC Porto’s chances looked like they were dashed.

They did show flashes of brilliance, especially through William Gomes and Alan Varela, who both had efforts cannon off the bar, but it just wasn’t enough to get Porto back into the contest.

Ultimately, when it mattered, their defence just wasn’t at the races, and they looked shell-shocked in both legs after the two decisive mistakes.

They couldn’t avenge their league phase loss to Forest, and bowed out of the competition, as the Reds soared into the UEFA Europa League semi-final.
