In what is their 58th time participating in a European club competition, Olympiakos has finally reached the final. Perhaps it is fitting for José Luis Mendilibar’s side that their maiden European final will be what is practically a home game for them. With that said, for all of their domestic dominance, the Piraeus-based outfit has seldom translated that to the continental scene. This season is the first time in the millennium in which they have reached at least the quarterfinals of a UEFA club competition.
Things did not go well domestically for Olympiakos as they finished third in Greece behind AEK Athens and PAOK Thessaloniki. In the cup, they fell at the round of 16 on penalties to Panathinaikos, their biggest rivals. While they did qualify for the Conference League qualifiers for next season, Olympiakos will look to upgrade their European spot.
After missing out on European football for five seasons in a row, next term will be Fiorentina’s third successive continental journey, regardless of the outcome of Wednesday’s final. A second consecutive eighth place finish in the Serie A was enough for at least Conference League football next summer for La Viola. Vincenzo Italiano’s outfit will look to exact revenge on last year’s defeat to West Ham in the showpiece.
This will be Fiorentina’s sixth European final, and second in the UECL. They are the only team to have reached the final of all UEFA club competitions, defunct and current. It is also the second time that the Tuscans have reached European finals in back-to-back seasons, having taken part in the now-defunct UEFA Cup Winners Cup showpieces in 1960/61 and 1961/62.

With that said, Fiorentina is the slight favourite going into this one. After all, they are unbeaten in the Conference League from the group stage on this term.
