Everton’s Lucas Digne has fallen into the radar of three Premier League clubs that are looking to bolster their squad for the remainder of the season. Chelsea, Newcastle United and West Ham United are the interested teams, according to Sky Sports, who have contacted the club for the player.
Napoli are also interested in the French defender, but they prefer a loan deal which Everton doesn’t prefer at the moment. It is also reported that an unnamed fourth Premier League club has also shown interest in the Frenchman.
Everton are surprisingly one of the few clubs that are threatened with relegation this season. Carlo Ancelotti left the Toffees just six months into taking the role, and the former Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez has been having a tough time keeping the club afloat since. Everton are currently eight points ahead of the 18th placed Burnley who have two games in hand.
Everton’s Lucas Digne Set for a Move Away From the Club?
Digne Falling Out With Benitez at Everton
Lucas Digne graduated from the French club Lile and made his professional debut there. Right when he became a regular during the second season, PSG signed him in 2013. The move didn’t help him much as his appearances kept decreasing. Two seasons later, he was loaned out to AS Roma which eventually triggered a significant move.
He was their undisputed player the whole season and he amassed 42 appearances with the Serie A club. The end of that loan spell saw Barcelona sign him from the Parisians in a deal worth £17 million in 2016. Although it didn’t turn out like the Roma period, he did manage to grab four silverware during his two-years stay.
The 28-year-old defender joined the English side, Everton in 2018 and finally got what he wanted. Right from the beginning, Digne cemented his place as the primary left-back. He has kept that position for the last three seasons until now. Benitez and Digne are not getting along quite well. While Digne’s difficulty is with the manager’s tactics, the gaffer finds the player’s attitude questionable.
Either way, this has alerted the other clubs who have shown interest in signing Everton’s Lucas Digne. The only advancement in the situation known is that he won’t be cheap. Everton are said to have set a price tag of £30 million if a club wishes to sign him.
All Suitors Looking to Strengthen Their Squad
West Ham have become a completely new club under David Moyes and they have set the top-4 as their current target. Although they are the least favourites amongst the three to sign Digne this summer, his addition will definitely help them push for their goal.
In case of necessity, Chelsea are in desperate need of a wing-back. Chelsea have a prolonged injury list and most of them belong to the defence. To make things even worse, Ben Chilwell tore his ACL during the 4-0 win against Juventus in November. He has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. Although expensive, Digne’s availability could be their ray of hope.
Newcastle United have already begun their transformation. Kieran Trippier, their first signing since the takeover, has landed in England to complete his medicals. While they have secured one side of the defence, they will now be looking at the other which would increase their chances of surviving the Premier League this season.
