Xavi Wants Mohamed Salah to Kickstart New Project at Barça
Liverpool Legend In Barcelona’s Sights
The new head coach is keen on the Egyptian winger who turns 30 next summer. Catalan news source El Nacional claim that Barcelona and president Joan Laporta are ‘working in silence’ to organise a deal for Salah.
However, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is incredibly eager to keep Salah at the club. The Reds are surely determined to prevent a repeat of previous transfers. The club saw Luis Suárez and Philippe Coutinho move to Catalonia for big money.
Financial Dire Straits
It is widely reported that FC Barcelona are in financial turmoil. Their summer signings, including Luuk de Jong and an ageing and injury-prone Sergio Agüero were far from satisfying to fans.
This was followed by the re-signing of 38-year-old Dani Alves, eligible to play from January. That leaves fans unsure as to how a Salah move would come to happen.
Mohamed Salah’s current contract at Anfield expires in June 2023. The Catalans would be hopeful of prising the Egyptian away before he signs a new bumper deal. But the fee would have to be substantial for Liverpool to consider letting him go.
Besides Mohamed Salah, the Spanish giants are linked with other players. Red Bull Salzburg star Karim Adeyemi, says Marca, and Chelsea’s veteran defender César Azpilicueta are touted. Barcelona are keen to take advantage of Azpilicueta’s expiring contract, according to ESPN.
World Cup Hopes
Mohamed Salah featured from the bench as Egypt beat Gabon 2-1 on November 16th. The star was expected to rest but featured from the bench. The win sees Egypt, coached by ex-Real Madrid boss Carlos Queiroz, consigned to the play-offs next year.
