Enzo Maresca’s Cryptic Comments Spark Confusion After Chelsea vs Everton 2-0 Win

With a 2-0 win in the Chelsea vs Everton Premier League clash on Saturday, December 13, the Blues have ended a four-game winless run, and moved back into the top four in the Premier League table.

Despite the positive result, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca turned heads as he spoke to the media post-match.

‘Worst 48 Hours Since I Joined the Club’

Speaking after the match at Stamford Bridge, Enzo Maresca praised his players but then made a startling remark about the previous two days. “Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst 48 hours since I joined the club,” Maresca said, adding that it’s “Because many people didn’t support us.”

When pressed for clarification, Maresca repeated that it was a lack of support that had made the period difficult. However, he did not identify who he was referring to, saying only that it was “in general.”

Reporters asked whether he meant supporters or people inside the club, but Maresca insisted that his comments were not aimed at the fans. “I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans,” he added.

The cryptic nature of his comments has caused confusion and speculation. Could he have been hinting at internal tensions within the club? Or did his remarks relate to criticism the team and manager have faced in recent days?

Maresca stayed vague as the reports probed him, leaving many to question what exactly he intended.

Chelsea vs Everton: Not the Prettiest Win for the Blues

Maresca’s victory in the Chelsea vs Everton game was not straightforward. The Blues took the lead through Cole Palmer, who scored on his first home start in months. Malo Gusto added a second goal, doubling the advantage before half-time.

Maresca praised the effort of his young squad in a week he described as “complicated.” He highlighted the versatility of players like Reece James and Malo Gusto, both of whom have been deployed in unfamiliar positions to help the team cope with injuries and tactical changes.

“We said many times that Reece [James] and Malo [Gusto], they are both full-backs and today they were both midfielders. So, the effort, the open mind, the way they want to learn has been fantastic and this is the reason why I praise the players because with so many problems, they are doing very well after a complicated week.”

The Chelsea vs Everton 2-0 win offered some relief after a run of mixed results that included a draw with Bournemouth and a defeat to Leeds, as well as a recent Champions League loss away at Atalanta. Chelsea have shown signs of brilliance at times this season but have also lacked consistency, particularly in defence.

Palmer’s goal was only his third this season, and it provided a much-needed boost for the 23-year-old, who has struggled with injuries. Gusto’s contribution at both ends of the pitch was also significant.

Despite the positive result on the pitch, it is Maresca’s off-hand comments that will dominate the headlines. His choice of words, and refusal to specify who he was referring to, have led to questions about whether there are deeper issues behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge.

For now, Chelsea will look to build on their win as they continue their 2025/26 campaign, and claim authority in the top spots of the Premier League table. But the focus may remain on Maresca’s remarks and what they reveal about the pressures facing the Italian manager during a challenging period at the club.
