The Aston Villa vs Nottingham Forest UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg will certainly be an interesting clash between two English sides looking to reach a final of a European competition.

With three English teams left in Europe, none in the UEFA Champions League, these two in the UEFA Europa League, and Crystal Palace in the UEFA Conference League, one of these sides will be looking to bring silverware back to England.

After a hotly contested first leg, in which a Chris Wood penalty gave Forest a 1-0 lead on aggregate ahead of the second leg, Unai Emery’s men will be fired up to deliver a win in front of their home crowd to push them into the final.

However, with the two sides in different runs of form ahead of this UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg, the stage is set for a pulsating encounter at Villa Park.

Aston Villa vs Nottingham Forest: Can Villa Banish Their Poor Form And Reach The UEFA Europa League Final?

Unai Emery’s men have been on a poor run of form as of late. The Villans are still in the race for a top four finish in the Premier League; however, defeats in their last two league games has put doubt on that.

In the UEFA Europa League, they only experienced one defeat throughout the whole tournament, but that changed when they faced Nottingham Forest, who dealt them their second loss of the competition.

Their recent league game against Tottenham Hotspur, which the Villans lost 2-1, showed a lack of attacking prowess and defensive stability.

With that being said, the Aston Villa manager did make several changes to his squad to rest some of his key players ahead of the second leg against Nottingham Forest.

After flying high at the start of the season, the Villans have faded away, and their up-and-down form shows that this second leg at Villa Park will be a massive unknown as to what sort of game it will be.

From the UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg, the game was very open and even. The driving force for Nottingham Forest was that penalty, which was clinically converted by Chris Wood, but Villa are by no means out of this tie.

Casting our minds back to when Villa faced Forest at Villa Park, Emery’s men were able to grind out a 3-1 victory, proving that playing in front of your home fans throws a completely different complexity on this semi-final second leg.

Aston Villa vs Nottingham Forest: Forest Hitting Brilliant Form At The Right Time

Forest have completed an absolutely amazing turnaround under Vitor Pereira’s stewardship, pulling a six-point gap on the Premier League relegation zone with three games to go.

The Portuguese manager has come in and completely transformed Forest, making the Reds a confident side that once again has rediscovered their identity.

Unbeaten in their last 10 games in all competitions, Nottingham Forest have recaptured their form, and have done so at the right point of the season with a UEFA Europa League final at stake.

Almost guaranteed Premier League safety, and with the semi-final second leg in mind, Pereira made eight changes to his side that faced Chelsea on Monday.

Even with the sheer number of changes, Forest beat the struggling Blues 3-1 and stunned the whole of the Premier League with their impressive victory.

Vitor Pereira’s huge gamble of rotating the squad paid off, which means his squad should be fresh ahead of the UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg.

The only worry for Forest, their captain, Morgan Gibbs-White, had to come off due to a gash that he sustained after a collision with Robert Sanchez in the second half of the Chelsea game.

It would be a big blow for the Reds if their captain is to miss the clash; however, Forest have several other talented players that can hopefully fill the gap created by Gibbs-White’s injury.

Aston Villa vs Nottingham Forest: Head-To-Head Record

In the head-to-head stakes, we know that Forest took the recent clash with a 1-0 win at the City Ground in the UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg.

All-time, these two sides have met 137 times, with the Villans taking the larger portion of wins with 64 victories compared to Forest’s 41 wins.

The last time Villa were beaten by the Reds at Villa Park was in the 1994/95 Premier League season. In October 1994, Forest emerged 2-0 victors over the Villans.

A record that has stood for over 30 years, can Villa extend their unbeaten run against Forest at Villa Park and spark a UEFA Europa League comeback, or will the Reds prevail and book their place in the final?
