A goalless draw against Ghana in the England World Cup 2026 campaign on Tuesday, June 23, means that the Three Lions are still in a comfortable position in their group, but some pressure will be on them to win in their last match against Panama to top the group.
The England vs Ghana match saw the Three Lions dominate and have more than 75% ball possession, but Thomas Tuchel’s men were not able to breach the resilient Ghanaian defence.
The England World Cup 2026 dreams will have to be backed up by a positive performance in the final group game for the Three Lions to attain ultimate glory after 60 long years.
England World Cup 2026: Lack Of Clinical Edge
The first match of the England World Cup 2026 campaign ended in a 4-2 win over Croatia, with a very resolute attacking display in the second half.
However, three of England’s four goals were scored by forwards Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford, with midfielder Jude Bellingham scoring the other.
Kane suffered a barren match against Ghana, and none of the midfielders stepped up to score either.
For all of Bellingham’s potential as a player, he has only seven goals in 50 international caps for England, something that is definitely not up to the standard for the midfielder of a top nation.
The Three Lions star has had a solitary prolific season for Real Madrid in 2023/24, but otherwise, his goalscoring record remains quite ordinary.
Declan Rice, another tireless midfielder for England, has seven goals in 78 international caps. Elliot Anderson, the young defensive midfielder, is yet to score in 11 international caps, similar to Kobbie Mainoo, who is without a goal in his 14 caps.
Those goal-scoring stats are not very encouraging, which means that England are too dependent on their forward line to score goals.
As neither Marcus Rashford nor Bukayo Saka is assured of a place in the starting XI, it is mainly Kane who has to shoulder the responsibility of scoring goals in almost every match.

England World Cup 2026: Comparisons To Other Big Nations
If one compares the stats mentioned above with those of top midfielders for other nations, it does not look very good for England.
Jamal Musiala has 10 goals in 44 matches, and Florian Wirtz has 11 in 43 matches for Germany, Michael Olise has seven in 19 matches for France, and Tijjani Reijnders has seven in 34 matches for the Netherlands.
Most of those numbers are well below the ones possessed by the forwards, but still better than the ones English midfielders have.
Two of the more experienced midfielders, Kevin de Bruyne and Bruno Fernandes, have 37 goals in 121 matches and 29 goals in 91 matches, respectively, which puts their goal-scoring ratios at a much higher level than the current English ones.
The Spanish midfielders also have low numbers in terms of scoring goals.
Pedri and Fabian Ruiz have six goals each in 43 and 44 matches, respectively; however, Spain’s playing style is distinctly different from the English one.
The Spanish midfielders play more short passes, and their midfielders typically do not try to score goals with shots from the edge of the box.
However, the number posed by the English midfielders should be higher, given their more direct playing style.
As the England vs Ghana match pointed out, Kane cannot bail the Three Lions out every time. The sooner England and their manager Thomas Tuchel understand it, the better it will be for the England World Cup 2026 campaign in North America.
