During the Real Betis vs Real Madrid match, José Mourinho endured his first defeat of the 2026/2027 La Liga season when Los Verdiblancos shocked Los Blancos at the Estadio La Cartuja. The Spanish kings missed a lot of open sitters in the Real Betis vs Real Madrid game, which didn’t sit well with some club legends.

According to Sergio Ramos:

️“[Real] Madrid should be beating Real Betis comfortably, even without a coach on the touchline. This is not a game where you can blame the manager. A team with world-class players like Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella should have done much better. The quality is there, but the performance was simply not good enough”.

It is argued that Mourinho’s game plan was totally off in the Real Betis vs Real Madrid match. However, it is suggested the ex-Porto manager isn’t to blame, given the fact that Real Madrid had a 1.99 XG rating and six big chances created, compared to Betis’s 0.11 XG and zero big chances created.

Los Blancos also enjoyed 56% possession, but couldn’t hurt the opponent’s defence. Although Arda Güler and Jude Bellingham played their part, there was no Bernardo Silva to dictate the tempo of the game. As a show of his football brilliance in every game he features in, Bellingham gave three key passes, with one of them turning out to be a big chance. On the other hand, Güler gave seven key passes, and three of those turned out to be big chances created. However, Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde slotted in as the two holding midfielders, and the duo couldn’t control the midfield, and that’s where Bernardo Silva was largely missed.

Real Betis vs Real Madrid: Vinicius Junior And Kylian Mbappe Alone Can’t Carry Los Blancos

Vinicius Junior didn’t have the best of games, as he was pocketed by the former Barcelona player Hector Bellerin, losing possession of the ball 23 times. It was obvious the Real Madrid forward wasn’t pleased with his match stats in the Real Betis vs Real Madrid game. Mourinho later tried to get the attention of the player after the final whistle but was clearly snubbed.

As for Mbappe, he was far from himself in the Real Betis vs Real Madrid match. Here are the statistics of the forward’s performance despite featuring in the full 90 minutes:

• 7 shots

• 4 big chances missed

• 1 penalty missed

• 5/13 duels won

• Lost possession 18 times

The blockbuster shock was that he missed a 93rd-minute penalty in the Real Betis vs Real Madrid match, which Vinicius had won. If Mbappe had put the goal in the back of the net, Madrid would have come level with Betis. Unfortunately, the goalkeeper saved the shot, and ex-Barça defender Marc Bartra cleared the rebound.

The saga at the end of the game involved VAR deciding whether Marc Bartra interfered with the penalty kick, which led to him clearing the rebound. After a long review, VAR answered in the negative. It is suggested Mourinho should field Mbappe in the left wing role, as the Frenchman hasn’t really adjusted to playing as a target man, and feature Carlos Espi in the number nine position.

Real Betis vs Real Madrid: Troy Parrot And Hector Bellerin Were Exceptional

Defeating Real Madrid isn’t for everyone, but Real Betis are a team that makes it difficult for Los Blancos to scale through. Although Troy Parrot clinched the win, Héctor Bellerín had an amazing game against Real Madrid. The player’s stats include:

• 11 defensive contributions

• 6 tackles won

• 2 interceptions

• 2 clearances

• 5 recoveries

• 8 duels won

To crown it all, he pocketed Vinicius, and it appears Real Betis are eyeing a bigger accolade: winning the La Liga title this season.
