Chelsea hosts Tottenham in an old London classic. A key game for both teams’ European future with a win being the only useful result.
It has been a tough couple of days for Chelsea since their FA Cup elimination against Manchester City. They went on to lose 5-0 against Arsenal and draw 2-2 at Villa Park, meaning just a single point of the possible six in a crucial time of the season. However, the performance in Birmingham ended on a positive note. They came back from being 2-0 down to a draw with a complete change of attitude and would have gotten all three points if not for another refutable VAR decision against them, disallowing Disasi’s winner in the 95th minute.
The Blues’ chances of a European spot next season were even more compromised by Newcastle’s 5-1 win over Sheffield United. Mauricio Pochettino’s side now trails Manchester United by six points and Newcastle by five, meaning a win midweek is a must to be back in contention. After Tottenham, they face a more favourable fixture on paper and their rivals are crucially set to play against each other, guaranteeing at least one of them will lose points.
Tottenham seems to be falling off as the season comes to an end, hindering their chances of finishing in the top four. On Sunday, they lost 3-2 to Arsenal at home in the North London derby. The game was 3-0 to the Gunners in the first half who capitalized on every single chance they got whereas Spurs could not. The Lilywhites got back in the game mainly due to an inspiring performance from Cristian Romero but the final push was not enough to get the draw, meaning no points and no spoiling their rival’s title charge either.
They are now seven points behind Aston Villa with two extra games remaining, but as the games go by the points on the table mean a whole lot more than the ones still up for grabs. Besides the points difference, Spurs still have a very tough fixture with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City among the five games remaining making the feat a lot harder than it already is.
