The release of England’s 2026 World Cup squad has sparked outrage across the country, with reactions ranging from disbelief to fury as fans continue to debate several controversial decisions made by Thomas Tuchel.

Before Tuchel’s appointment as the Three Lions head coach, the German was already known for being a fiery and uncompromising figure – a manager willing to step on toes, make ruthless calls, and disappoint even the biggest names if he believes it will improve his chances of success.

And with the announcement of England’s World Cup squad, he has once again shown that same ruthlessness.

The former Chelsea boss is currently one of the most criticised figures in the country, with his controversial squad selection causing major division among England fans and pundits alike.

Several high-profile stars failed to make the cut for the upcoming tournament, but perhaps no omission has generated more discussion than that of Chelsea attacking sensation Cole Palmer.

England’s 2026 World Cup Squad: Injuries, Form, and the Reason Behind Cole Palmer’s Omission

Widely regarded as one of England’s most gifted attacking players over the last few seasons, Cole Palmer has enjoyed a meteoric rise that elevated him into conversations alongside some of the best footballers in the world.

The 24-year-old, who finished eighth in the 2024/25 Ballon d’Or rankings, was named Chelsea’s Player of the Year in 2023 and has accumulated several major individual honours, including a PFA Award, the Premier League Young Player of the Season award, a place in the FIFA Best XI, and several other accolades.

Across his previous two seasons at Stamford Bridge, Cole Palmer registered an impressive combined total of 66 goals and assists in 91 appearances, with his remarkable output also seeing him climb into eighth place on Chelsea’s all-time Premier League goalscoring list.

However, the 24-year-old endured what was arguably the most difficult campaign of his senior career this season.

Troubled by a broken toe and recurring groin problems that forced him to miss several matches, Palmer managed just 25 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, scoring nine goals and providing only one assist (13 goal contributions in all competitions).

The England international, who is currently enduring a 12-match goal drought, has looked far from the electrifying player fans have become accustomed to seeing over the past few years.

And with England desperate to win the World Cup for the first time since 1966, the news of Palmer’s World Cup snub arguably feels understandable, with the German manager seemingly unconvinced that the Chelsea star is currently fit enough or in strong enough form to displace the other attacking options available in the squad and deliver in the intense summer heat of the USA, Canada and Mexico.

England’s 2026 World Cup Squad: Why Thomas Tuchel’s Ruthless Decision Could Help Cole Palmer

Palmer’s World Cup omission could actually provide the attacking midfielder with a much-needed escape from the intense scrutiny of the English media this summer.

Being regarded as Chelsea’s talisman naturally comes with enormous pressure, but for the past two years, he has done well to handle those expectations.

Having previously admitted that he had rarely suffered injuries earlier in his career, he also opened up about the mental struggles that accompanied his recent dip in form.

Because of that, being left out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad may ultimately work in his favour rather than against him.

For the first time in two years, Palmer will benefit from a full and uninterrupted summer break.

Last summer, his schedule was heavily affected by participation in the Club World Cup, and the lack of adequate rest arguably contributed to the injury problems that disrupted his season.

With no international tournament to worry about this summer, the England international now has a rare opportunity to recover properly – both physically and mentally ahead of what could be a defining campaign under Xabi Alonso at Chelsea.

For a player like Palmer who loves challenges, being dropped by a ruthless manager like Thomas Tuchel can act as a powerful psychological catalyst, which would give him a point to prove and refuel the competitive fire that saw his initial rise from Manchester City’s bench.

Why Chelsea’s Omitted Stars May Hold the Club’s Biggest Advantage

Unlike previous editions of the tournament that were hosted by a single nation, the 2026 World Cup will, for the first time in history, be staged across three different countries.

That unique format means players will be forced to travel long distances repeatedly throughout the competition, while also dealing with intense summer temperatures – conditions that could easily lead to fatigue, burnout, and jet lag.

For Chelsea, the absence of several key players from England’s 2026 World Cup squad and other national team selections could actually hand the club a significant advantage heading into next season.

In the case of Cole Palmer, missing the tournament means he is far less likely to return to Cobham physically exhausted, mentally drained, or carrying fresh injury concerns after a demanding summer schedule.

And he is not the only Chelsea player expected to benefit from an uninterrupted off-season. Talents such as João Pedro, Andrey Santos, Levi Colwill, and Liam Delap, alongside several others, are also set to miss the tournament, potentially giving Chelsea a fresher and more physically prepared squad ahead of the new campaign.
