Borussia Dortmund vs Atlético Madrid Match Preview
Six days on from a 2-1 win at home, Atlético Madrid heads to Germany where they will look to finish off a Borussia Dortmund side who is not yet out of the tie following a late goal in the first leg.
Despite a win this weekend in the Bundesliga, which officially qualified them for next season’s European club competitions, Dortmund is far from assured a Champions League spot. In fact, they currently sit level on points with RB Leipzig, but is fifth on goal difference.
While Germany currently sits second in UEFA’s seasonal country coefficient ranking, which would make fifth place enough for UCL football as things stand, winning a second Champions League trophy would be much more favourable for Edin Terzić’s side. Since making the final 11 years ago, Dortmund has not gotten past this stage of the competition, having last reached the final eight three years ago.
As for Atleti, they are 90 minutes away from a seventh European Cup/Champions League semifinal, and a first in seven years. Sitting in fourth place in LaLiga, four points ahead of Athletic Club, Diego Simeone’s side is not yet assured of UCL football in the fall either.
Atlético Madrid’s recent away form is a reason for bother, as their recent 2-1 success at Villarreal ended a run of six away from the Wanda Metropolitano without a win. Seeing that their opponents have a solid home record, this could be a serious cause for concern.

While their away form is rather dodgy, it should not be forgotten that Atleti has won their last three matches across all competitions. That is in contrast to Dortmund, whose weekend win ended a two-game losing slide.
Expect both teams to play a rather tentative match, given what is on the line, which could very well suit Atleti. The German side will likely have much of the ball, something their Spanish visitors will be comfortable with. In their three-game winning streak, Colchoneros had an average possession of about 41%. Thus, expect Atleti to soak up pressure, and hit Dortmund on the counter. That will likely be enough to see them through.

While Atleti’s last five games each saw over 2.5 goals, it is quite likely they will resort to a very defensive gameplan. The onus is on Dortmund to try and break them down, but that will be quite the challenge in this case.
